Loris: A Handwritten Font That Adds Soul to Branding

There’s a moment in every branding project where you open a blank brand board and feel the weight of the creative decision ahead. That’s when I first tested Loris on a logo concept for a boutique identity project. The font immediately caught my eye—not because it was flashy, but because it had a quiet confidence, a sense of character that felt like it could carry a brand’s story with ease.

A Handwritten Font with Personality

Loris is a handwritten font, and not just any handwritten font. It has a natural flow, a subtle elegance that feels both modern and timeless. The letterforms are well proportioned, with a slight slant that gives it a dynamic feel without being too dramatic. Its curves are smooth but not overly ornate, making it versatile enough for both display and supporting text.

What makes Loris stand out is its ability to convey warmth and approachability. It’s the kind of font that feels like it was written by someone who cares about the message behind the words. Whether used as a headline or an accent, Loris brings a human touch to design work, which is especially valuable in today’s digital landscape where brands often struggle to feel real.

Testing Loris in Real Design Work

I used Loris for a café visual refresh project, pairing it with a sans serif font for contrast. On the logo, it worked beautifully—its soft curves gave the café a welcoming vibe, while the clean sans serif provided balance. When applied to packaging mockups, Loris added a personal flair that made the product feel more artisanal and authentic.

On a business card, Loris performed admirably. It was legible at small sizes, which is always a concern with script fonts. I found that using it in combination with a bold sans serif for the company name created a strong visual hierarchy without overwhelming the reader. For social media graphics, Loris was a hit—it added a handcrafted feel that resonated well with the target audience.

One of my favorite uses was on a website header. Loris helped set the tone for a creative studio identity, making the site feel more personal and less corporate. It was also effective in editorial design, where it added a layer of creativity without distracting from the content.

When to Use Loris and When Not To

Loris is best suited for short phrases, headlines, logos, and decorative elements. It’s not ideal for long body text or formal corporate use due to its stylized nature. However, with careful typography choices, it can be used in supporting text for smaller sections of a website or print material.

That said, I’ve used Loris in a few instances where it didn’t quite fit. For example, on a skincare product label, the font’s softness clashed with the product’s clinical feel. In such cases, pairing Loris with a more structured font like Montserrat or Playfair Display can create a better balance.

Font Pairing and Practical Tips

When pairing Loris, consider its personality. It works well with modern sans serifs for a contemporary look or with classic serif fonts for a more traditional feel. For a balanced design, I recommend testing it alongside a neutral typeface to ensure readability and visual harmony.

It’s also worth noting that Loris comes with several styles, including alternates, ligatures, and swashes. These can add variety to your design work without losing the font’s core character. Be sure to review these options before finalizing your project.

Before using Loris in client work, always check the commercial font licensing. This ensures that you’re compliant with any usage restrictions, especially if the font will be used on merchandise, websites, or print-on-demand products.

The Verdict on Loris

Loris is more than just a pretty font—it’s a tool that can elevate your brand’s visual identity. It brings a level of creativity and personality that’s hard to replicate with standard typefaces. Whether you’re working on a logo, packaging, or social media graphics, Loris has the potential to make your designs stand out.

If you’re looking for a font that adds soul to your branding work, Loris is definitely worth considering. Just remember to test it in context, pair it thoughtfully, and always verify your licensing. With the right approach, Loris can become a trusted part of your design toolkit.
